HARRISBURG – Rep. Eric Nelson (R-Westmoreland) today announced grant funding was awarded to several local governments within the 57th Legislative District, including grants to fire departments, area schools and local governments.
“I am happy to work with Sen. Kim Ward to fund these important projects and help our local communities,” Nelson said. “We are helping to upgrade roofs, emergency shelters, sidewalks and sewage inspection capability. These important foundational projects will benefit our communities for generations to come.”
A nearly $750,000 grant was awarded to the city of Greensburg, on behalf of the Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department No. 2, for a roof replacement and solar project. Once a new roof is installed, solar panels will be installed, improving the station’s overall energy efficiency. A similar grant, for roughly $150,000, was also awarded to Southwest Greensburg for upgrades to its fire department and emergency operations center. In Hempfield Township, a nearly $120,000 grant will be used to purchase a mobile camera system used to complete inspections of the stormwater sewer system.
The grants, known as Local Share Account grants, support economic development, job training, community improvement and public interest projects through gaming funds collected under the PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act (Act 71 of 2004).
Also announced were grants provided by the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program. The Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center received a nearly $2.5 million grant to make energy efficiency improvements at its New Stanton facility. The project is expected to save taxpayers at least 30% annually in energy costs. In addition, Hempfield Area School District will be receiving $1 million to replace the roof and perform heating and air conditioning and plumbing work at Stanwood Elementary School.
Additional grants to municipalities in the 57th Legislative District include:
· Adamsburg Borough - $143,454 to upgrade the Main Street and Penn Adamsburg Road intersection and to excavate and pave Manor Station Road and Orchard Street.
· New Stanton Borough - $434,365 to build a new pavilion and replace playground equipment in New Stanton Park.
· Southwest Greensburg Borough - $97,231 for a new public works vehicle and new landscaping equipment.
