Nelson Reacts to Wolf’s Greensburg Visit

HARRISBURG – Rep. Eric Nelson (R-Hempfield) issued the following statement in response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s visit today to Greensburg:

“I appreciate Governor Wolf coming to Greensburg to review some of our infrastructure projects and glad we agree on the need to prioritize and get them moving. Additionally, I recognize we disagree on how we would fund them.

“It is no secret I oppose a new severance tax on top of the existing impact fee because it will force even more business to neighboring states and result in the loss of good-paying, family-sustaining jobs. The natural gas impact fee has already raised $1.7 billion since 2012 and the majority of those funds stay in the county where drilling occurs.

“The impact fee generates far more than the traditional severance taxes in Ohio and West Virginia combined. In addition to a severance tax, Restore PA wants to float a $4.5 billion bond at 5 percent interest that would be paid off over 30 years.

“I shall continue working with Governor Wolf and the members of the House and Senate to find sustainable and responsible ways to bring these projects to the table, but I do not support creating a new debt program at the expense of our children and grandchildren.”

The 57th Legislative District includes the following Westmoreland County communities: the city of Greensburg; the townships of Hempfield (part) and Salem; and the boroughs of Delmont, Hunker, New Stanton, South Greensburg, Southwest Greensburg and Youngwood.
