Legislation designed to reform Pennsylvania’s state employee and public school employee retirement systems has been approved by the Pennsylvania House. Senate Bill 1 would establish a hybrid retirement benefit plan, including defined benefit and defined contribution components. New employees would be mandatory members of the new hybrid plan.

Nelson and a Bipartisan Group of Lawmakers Advocate for ‘My Work, My Choice’

A bipartisan group of legislators from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives rallied on Monday in the state Capitol to prevent individuals with disabilities from being forced to sit in the community and leave day programs and sheltered workshops where they are comfortable. Rep. Eric Nelson (R-Westmoreland) led the rally, which was attended by hundreds of supporters, and said lawmakers want to ensure disabled individuals can maintain the ability to have choice in the workplace. Following the rally, the House Human Services Committee conducted a hearing on the topic to gather more information.

Rep. Nelson Comments on PA’s Growing Drug Epidemic Following Westmoreland Co. Hearing

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is continuing a series of statewide hearings aimed at finding better ways to tackle Pennsylvania’s opioid addiction crisis. The third of eight hearings was held Wednesday in Westmoreland County and included testimony from area law enforcement officials and drug treatment organizations about the growing drug epidemic and what new strategies are needed to address the situation. The General Assembly will be convening a special session to address the opioid crisis this fall in Harrisburg. Rep. Eric Nelson (R-Westmoreland) attended the hearing and said this joint effort is the first step to putting effective solutions in place that will help bring an end to the drug addiction problems facing the state.

Nelson Pleased with Shell’s Announcement They Will Follow Through on Building a Natural Gas Cracker Plant in Beaver County

State lawmakers are pleased with the recent announcement by Shell Chemical that they will commit to the construction of a major petrochemical complex in Beaver County that includes an ethylene cracker plant. Development of the plant is viewed as a major victory for those who championed pro-growth state energy policies that put incentives in place to encourage the use of natural gas produced in Pennsylvania. Building the plant is expected to create as many as 6000 construction jobs and an additional 600 full-time permanent jobs to staff the facility near Pittsburgh.

Rep. Eric Nelson Takes Oath of Office

In Harrisburg on Tuesday, Rep. Eric Nelson formally took the oath of office and began his service as the new State Representative for the 57th legislative district in Westmoreland County. Nelson was elected in a special election following the resignation of former Rep. Tim Krieger, who now serves as a Westmoreland County Judge. Rep. Nelson said he is eager to lead by example and demonstrate the principles that reflect the people he represents.
